Catherine Opie: The “Icehouses”
May 11 – June 15, 2002
Gallery Hours: Tuesday - Saturday 11:00 - 5:00 pm
Opening reception: Saturday, May 11th, 6:00 - 8:00 pm
Regen Projects is pleased to announce an exhibition of Los Angeles based photographer, Catherine Opie's new series, the "Icehouses.” Catherine Opie has become known for her photographic series of portraits and American urban landscapes ranging in format from large scale color works to smaller black and white silver gelatin prints. Moving from the territory of the body to the armature of the city, Opie's "various photographic series of the past decade are linked together by a conceptual framework organised around the notion of cultural portraiture." (Joshua Decter. Catherine Opie. Photographers' Gallery, London)
The “Icehouses” were created during a one year residency at the Walker Art Center as part of Opie’s ongoing series on American cities. These large scale color prints are almost monochromatic white with a jewel-like string of brightly colored fishing sheds along the horizon line. The “’Icehouses’ literally embody the skyline, forming a continuous cinematic panorama in which the sky meets the landscape at a point populated by human presence. The line that constitutes this horizon suggests both movement and a tension between boundaries and limitlessness.” (Douglas Fogle. Catherine Opie: Skyways & Icehouses. The Walker Art Center. 2002)
Opie's work has been exhibited in museums and galleries internationally. Recent solo exhibitions have been organized by The Saint Louis Art Museum, the Photographers’ Gallery in London, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. Opie has also exhibited at Regen Projects in Los Angeles, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Centre d'Art Contemporain in Geneva Switzerland; and the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg in Germany. Monographs of Catherine Opie's work have been published by the Photographers' Gallery in London and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.
Catherine Opie's work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and the Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco.
An opening reception for Catherine Opie will be held on Saturday, May 11th at Regen Projects from 6:00-8:00 pm. For further information please contact Shaun Caley Regen or Lisa Overduin at the gallery at (310) 276-5424.
