Regen Projects is pleased to present an exhibition of new work by Los Angeles-based artist Elliott Hundley. On view will be a series of paintings, collages, and bronze sculptures that defy easy classification. This marks the artist's third solo presentation at the gallery.
Working in a variety of media Hundley fuses painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, photography, and performance into rich, multi-faceted tableaux. Through a process ranging from gradual accumulation to spontaneous mark making, he builds up the surface of his works using quotidian found materials. Individual additions of embroidery thread, straight pins, ephemera, magazine cut-outs, photographs, and paint come together to form complex compositions that at first glance appear unified but on closer inspection reveal their intricate and dexterously crafted components.
Referencing both art history and a variety of interpretations of Orphic mythology, the exhibition features a series of large billboard sized collages in which elegantly attired characters are depicted amidst fragmented landscapes of bold strokes of color and flashes of neon. As in his earlier works, the images are the result of elaborate photo shoots orchestrated by the artist in his studio. Turning and shifting through space the figures create haunting apparitions that simultaneously materialize and dematerialize across the plane of the work.
A series of vibrantly hued paintings depict hybrid elements of still life, landscape, and portraiture. Paint, texture, form, and color perform in concert as elements of collaged materials invite the viewer to shift their perspective between the overall composition of the work and the fractured vignettes hidden within. Hundley employs an equally complex process in fabricating a suite of bronze sculptures. The striking figures, an amalgam of cast found objects and intricately soldered forms, are at once delicate and foreboding.
Elliott Hundley (b. 1975) received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design (1997) and his MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles (2005). The artist lives and works in Los Angeles.
