LAWRENCE WEINER EXHIBITION
December 8, 1989--January 20, 1990
Gallery Hours: Tuesday--Friday 10:00--6:00
Saturday 11:00--6:00
The Stuart Regen Gallery is pleased to announce its inaugural exhibition of works by Lawrence Weiner entitled “Assuming the Position.” Assuming the Position (1989) will occupy the main gallery, accompanied by earlier works in the auxiliary gallery.
Weiner began making work in the early sixties and pioneered much of the conceptual art movement. His idea that the conception of a work of art and its presentation through language as a sufficient means to render an artwork resulted in a groundbreaking approach to art and its presentation. Weiner’s “declaration of intent” from 1968 continues to be a succint manifesto for his later works:
1 AN ARTIST MAY CONSTRUCT A WORK
2 A WORK MAY BE FABRICATED
3 A WORK NEED NOT BE BUILT
A REASONABLE ASSUMPTION IS THAT EACH BEING EQUAL AND
CONSISTENT WITH THE INTENT OF THE ARTIST THE DECISION AS
TO CONDITION RESTS WITH THE NEEDS OF THE RECEIVER UPON
THE OCCASION OF RECEIVERSHIP
In Assuming the Position Weiner has constructed an exceptionally lyrical and playful work specifically for this exhibition which characteristically corresponds to his previous tenets.
We are particularly honored to present Lawrence Weiner’s first one-person show since 1974 in Los Angeles. Weiner has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and Europe, including solo exhibitions over the past four years at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Museum Haus Esters in Krefeld, Le Magasin in Grenoble, and ARC/Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris.
The gallery will publish a poster by Lawrence Weiner in an edition of 2000 for the exhibition. For further information please contact Stuart Regen or Shaun Caley at the gallery.
