LAWRENCE WEINER EXHIBITION
December 7, 1991--January 11, 1992
Gallery Hours: Tuesday--Saturday 10:00-6:00
The Stuart Regen Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of works by Lawrence Weiner. A large recent work will be installed in the main gallery with two earlier works in the back office and a selection of drawings from 1987-1991 in the auxiliary gallery.
Weiner began making work in the early sixties and pioneered much of the conceptual art movement. His notion that the conception of a work of art and its presentation through language as a sufficient means to render an artwork resulted in a groundbreaking approach to art and its presentation. Whereas the earlier works tended to be more art-specific in a conceptual dialogue, the newer works are often more lyrical and playful, opening up and embellishing Weiner’s 1968 “declaration of intent”:
1 AN ARTIST MAY CONSTRUCT A WORK
2 A WORK MAY BE FABRICATED
3 A WORK NEED NOT BE BUILT
A REASONABLE ASSUMPTION IS THAT EACH BEING EQUAL AND
CONSISTENT WITH THE INTENT OF THE ARTIST THE DECISION AS
TO CONDITION RESTS WITH THE NEEDS OF THE RECEIVER UPON
THE OCCASION OF RECEIVERSHIP
In addition to the actual works there will be a selection of Weiner’s drawings on view. The drawings have always been an integral part of Weiner’s work, functioning either as a document to the pieces or as a separate work or series unto themselves. Generally the drawings combine ink, watercolor, pencil, cut-outs, and stamps. As well as being of singular interest vis-a-vis Weiner’s installational aspect, the drawings function as extremely beautiful work sheets that are an essential component of his oeuvre.
Weiner has exhibited extensively in the United States, Europe, and other continents in both galleries and museums. His work is documented in numerous publications and artist’s books.
There will be a reception for the artist on Saturday, December 7th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. For further questions please contact Stuart Regen or Shaun Caley at the gallery.
