SAM REVELES: PAINTINGS
May 8th, 1993 - June 5th, 1993
Tuesday - Saturday 10:00 to 6:00
at Regen Projects
Regen Projects is pleased to announce the first one-person exhibition of paintings in the U.S. by New York artist Sam Reveles. Thirty-four year old Reveles was born in El Paso and received his M.F.A. in painting from Yale University. The paintings on view, some of which are from the “Codex: Frontera” series, are monochromes informed by Reveles’ history growing up on the Mexican-American border as well as recent travels through Mexico. The border serves as a hinterland wasteland that evokes an ancient history out of sync with current affairs. The paintings are constructed of lines as a journey, with definitive starting and ending points that erase any notion of time or geography in between. The lines converge and meld together, as a frontier is often an invisible line separating two countries and a demarcation of the displacement and non-assimilable nature of those placed somewhere between the codified lines.
Reveles’ earlier paintings evoked first life-lines and later a negative space where physical activity occurred on the canvas as an act of erasure. In his recent series Reveles uses lines as a vehicle for accumulation by repetition, as one would touch or hit the body of another. As art critic Jerry Saltz wrote recently, “This reference to the flesh is played out in the beautifully innocent totality of Sam Reveles’s encompassing monochrome paintings. Reveles’s work, which comes out of artists like Brice Marden, exudes instinct and a primitive sureness and bravery in reaching out to all the edges of his canvases.” Like Marden, the paintings are an intelligent, intuitive, experienced, and poetic inquiry into formalism. Yet they also exude the fierceness of nature, as in being physically acted upon by the physical, as a sensory, often overwhelming, and mysterious given. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Reveles trusts in a complex and articulate manifestation of experience as it finds its way onto the canvas. The results are lush, rich paintings unwaveringly and often cruelly informed by Reveles’ singular poetics.
Sam Reveles’ work has been seen in a one-person exhibition at Lisson Gallery in London and in
group shows at the Paula Cooper Gallery, SteinGladstone Gallery, and Stuart Regen Gallery.
An opening reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, May 8th from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Regen Projects. For further information please contact Stuart Regen or Shaun Caley at (310) 276-
