Regen Projects is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Lawrence Weiner. In conjunction with the exhibition, Regen Projects is publishing an artist book by Lawrence Weiner entitled SCREENPLAYS & MOVIES.

As a pioneer of the conceptual art movement, Lawrence Weiner was one of the first artists to “dematerialize” the object of art into the domain of ideas and language. For over thirty-five years Lawrence Weiner has been making art with language as his sculptural material. Weiner’s studio practice is based on the idea that an artist can draw on any material and present it as art without altering the material or taking it out of the everyday context, thereby destroying any hierarchy in terms of material and content. Weiner states, “ I am trying to deal with the fact that in each concurrent moment there is no subjective reality. They are all empirical realities and they occupy the same space at the same time.” * Weiner’s work may take many forms from text on a wall or building, lyrics in a song, dialogue in a film or video, to printed text in a book.

In 1969 Weiner published his statement of intent to address his work existing in language form.

1. THE ARTIST MAY CONSTRUCT THE WORK
2. THE WORK MAY BE FABRICATED
3. THE WORK NEED NOT BE BUILT

EACH BEING EQUAL AND CONSISTENT WITH THE INTENT OF THE ARTIST THE DECISION AS TO CONDITION RESTS WITH THE RECIEVER UPON THE OCCASION OF RECIEVERSHIP

Weiner’s work has been exhibited extensively in museums and galleries throughout the world. His work is documented in numerous artist’s books and publications. Most recently published in 2004 is Writing & Interviews of Lawrence Weiner 1968-2003 by Hatje Cantz Publishers. The following is a quote from a 1994 interview included in this latest publication on the subject of art and the role of the artist:

“An artist is a person who had sensed that they were dissatisfied with the configuration of the world as they found it, and they want to present another configuration, but since nothing comes out of the sky and nothing is invented, they are like voyagers, they are like sailors, which is very romantic. They are off into places which nobody else went to, but the difference between sailor and artist is that the former goes off into places and just looks around and gets laid in Tahiti, whereas the latter looks around and gets laid in Tahiti, but then they turn around and come back and tell somebody. That’s what an artist is, a man or woman that goes off into territories where they could go mad and come back and tell…It’s not the imaginary territory that they go into, and it’s not something on the inside.” *
