SAM REVELES: NEW PAINTINGS
December 13, 1995 - January 20, 1996
Gallery Hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 11-5
Opening reception: Wednesday, December 13th, 5:00-7:00 pm
Regen Projects is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Sam Reveles. The five abstract paintings, painted in Reveles's home town, El Paso, will be on view in the gallery.
Reveles, who resides in New York and El Paso, is known for the physicality of his paintings. In his new body of work Reveles underpaints what looks like a biomorphic collage in bright, if not
garish colors, which in fact are shapes and color gradations borrowed from Renaissance Italian religious paintings. Over the understructure come hard, often monochromatic strokes, sometimes mimicing the gesture of arabic scriptures, inspired by Reveles's recent travels throughout Morocco.
Reveles can collapse meaning and influence into pure painting like no other contemporary painter. Relying on the bright greens and purples, oranges and reds of buildings scattered throughout El Paso, and his formal education and training in the painting department at Yale University, Reveles's canvases wreak a kind of havoc within themselves, throwing varied aspects of painting into a struggle for domination. The recent paintings have opened up Reveles's palette, and, while the paintings struggle to be acheived, an exuberant harmony comes into play.
Reveles has exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, and London, and was among the recipients for the 1994 Jasper Johns' "Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts Grants."
An opening reception will be held for the artist on Wednesday, December 13th, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. For further information please contact Stuart Regen or Shaun Caley at the gallery.
