On the Verge of Visibility

For his first exhibition in Portugal, Wolfgang Tillmans (1968 Remscheid, Germany) has expanded the reception possibilities of his work by radical repositioning its multiple dimensions.In Serralves, he has paid special attention to what he describes as ‘vertical landscapes’ ― photographs of the natural phenomena of light that arise at dusk, when the sky meets the earth, and the clouds meet the sky. The artist later used some of these works to create anti-Brexit posters, i.e. in the campaign against the United Kingdom leaving the European Union.
The artist’s book, conceived and designed by Tillmans especially for the occasion, develops the concepts of the exhibition and includes a text by Suzanne Cotter, curator of the exhibition and Director of the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art, Porto.
